Well, for over 20 years, Sonic the Hedgehog series have been a tremendous asset to the gaming world. For Sega to decide to put the original classic in the 3DS is a terrific move. To this day, this game remains great for all audiences to enjoy. The way it’s implemented to the handheld world is amazing. Sonic in 3D proves that a classic can never die.
For those unfamiliar with the series, Sonic is a traditional platformer like Mario, Mega Man and such. Obviously, the main difference speed. Yes, Sonic relies on this feature to help him jump, spin, loop and attack throughout the game. The controls are tight and have less lag between actions. Mainly, he jumps and runs. While running, pressing down can cause him to do a spin attack, which allows the hero to break certain walls, defeat enemies and gain some momentum. However, this time the developers decided to take some extra steps and make things a bit easier. They give you the option to use the Spin Dash move, which was added originally in Sonic 2. It’s a pretty cool idea to try it out and see how different it feels using the feature to maneuver instead of playing it the normal way.
For a game to redone in 3D, it looks fantastic. Everything from the background to characters to items, it’s all crisp, high quality and even livelier than before. Oh, and remember the days when you played it on those old 80’s TVs with the semi-circular screen and retro quality? Yes, you can switch to that old-school look without having to reset the game. As for the 3D, it’s great. It’s not distracting or bizarre. The background is remarkably redesigned to scroll apart from the rest of the picture. Actually, it’s possible to have the back/foreground to either pop out or fill-in, which is cool.
Sonic indeed has some of the best soundtracks in video game genre. And they sound just as great as they did during the good ‘ol Genesis days. In fact, there is an option to change sound programs based on the Gen 1 or 2 models. Regardless, it’s a pleasant to listen to such music like the Green Hill or Marble Zone.
A few other minor additions are the playing in the International or Japanese version. Also, like the other Genesis games for the 3DS, you can save or change a few settings during pauses, so you can continue the game without losing data or restarting. In summary, Sonic the Hedgehog for the 3DS is a must buy especially for the fans of the franchises. For a price of 6 bucks, it’s definitely worth to relive the fun days of rolling around at the speed of sound. [❤]
